Killed for IPL bet
Panaji, June 21 (PTI): Five persons, including two minor grandsons of a 65-year-old woman, have been arrested for allegedly murdering her and stealing ornaments and cash to place bets on IPL and Euro Cup matches.
The body of Linda Cajetan Andrade was found last month from her home at Goa’s Velim village. Police had kept a watch on the suspects who were found spending the stolen money. One of them was arrested first and led the cops to the others.
Girl in well
Gurgaon (PTI): A four-year-old girl fell into a 70-feet-deep borewell while playing with friends in a village near here on Wednesday night. A pit is being dug parallel to the well to pull the child out. The army is helping in the rescue.
Smash spree
Indore (PTI): Unidentified miscreants smashed the panes of several cars in the city on Wednesday night, including one parked outside the house of the Madhya Pradesh industry minister.
Medical seats
New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Thursday asked six states to reply to the allegations that they were usurping the post-graduate medical seats for the all-India quota by not disclosing the vacant seats in their medical colleges. The court issued notices to Delhi, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana on a petition filed by a doctor, Esha Karwase.
Children sold
Rameswaram (PTI): Two boys aged 8 and 13, allegedly sold by their mother to a farmer in Tamil Nadu two years ago for Rs 20,000, have been rescued. The duo escaped and started staying with a woman. They have told police that their mother had to sell them because of poverty. The cops are looking for their mother and the farmer, and have sent the boys to an orphanage.
NIA chief
Kochi (PTI): Radha Vinod Raju, the first director general of the National Investigation Agency, died at a private hospital here on Thursday after a prolonged illness. He was 62 and is survived by his wife and two daughters.
