Accident alert for bridge approach

The East Singhbhum district administration on Thursday instructed the road construction department to ensure traffic safety aspects were kept in mind while building the approach to the still unfinished second Kharkai bridge.

Stating that three roads will meet the approach at the Bistupur end, deputy commissioner Himani Pande urged the road construction department and Jamshedpur Utility and Services Company (Jusco) to ensure that the area did not become accident prone.

“We already had a meeting with the road construction department’s executive engineer in this connection so that there remains no flaw in vehicular traffic movement in future,” said Pande.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the deputy commissioner said while on one hand the height of the new Kharkai bridge was about 4feet more than the existing one, there were three roads converging with the approach road.

The three arteries that will meet the approach are Kharkai Link Road that connects Kharkai bridge with the road passing by Jamshedpur Women’s College, Outer Circle Road leading to Voltas building or Adityapur More in Bistupur and a new road that is being built along Jugsalai Slag-Dump.

Elaborating on the issue, Pande said unlike on the Adityapur end where the height of the Adityapur-Kandra Road has been increased by 4ft, the height of Kharkai Link Road and the Outer Circle Road will not match the height of Jugsalai Slag-Dump Road.

“The height of Jugsalai Slag-Dump Road will match the height of the new bridge, whereas the height of the existing Kharkai Link Road and Outer Circle Road will remain unchanged. Hence the road construction department has to pay special attention while approving the structural design,” she said.

Notably, the stretch between Kharkai Link Road to the Kharkai bridge is accident prone where the fatal mishaps take place regularly. The district administration is taking the extra care prior to setting up the approach road as it is sanguine of more road mishaps if the design of the approach road is proper.

The deputy commissioner apprised about her concern to Jusco, which has been entrusted with the job of constructing the approach road of the Kharkai bridge's Bistupur end.
