Leader beats lady over cow

Tamluk, June 21: A Trinamul leader in East Midnapore allegedly dragged a 25-year-old homemaker by her hair and beat her unconscious after her cow strayed into his garden and grazed on jasmine flower plants last afternoon.

Villagers took Suchishmita Maity, a resident of Kharui village, to hospital, from where she was discharged today. She suffered injuries in her left hand, legs and back.

“I had tied my cow to a tether. I don’t know how it broke free and entered (Trinamul gram panchayat member) Tamradhwaj Panja’s garden. I apologised to him, but he assaulted me with a stick,” she said.

Suchishmita lodged complaints with the police and the district administration.

Panja said: “I was chasing a cow out of my garden when it hit the woman. She fell down and hurt herself.”

Suchishmita alleged she had informed the block medical officer in charge of the Sahid Matangini hospital, Arijit Roy, but instead of informing the police, he advised her to settle the matter with Panja. Roy denied the allegation.
