Policeman benched for robber slip

Durgapur, June 21: The assistant sub-inspector of police, who was on duty when a gang of robbers escaped with their accomplice after a burglary, was relieved from duties and sent to the Asansol police lines last night for dereliction of duty.

On Sunday, a gang of 20 armed people broke into the house of a retired ECL employee at Sinduli near Asansol and took away cash and ornaments worth around Rs 2.5 lakh.

As the gang was about to enter the next house, two police constables led by assistant sub-inspector Tapan Dubey arrived at the spot and the group fled. Dipen Roy, a youth whose house the robbers had planned to enter after their first operation, had caught one of the gang-members. The youth had also handed him over to the police.

But as Dubey was taking the robber to the police station in a jeep alone, the other robbers who were hiding nearby waylaid the vehicle, hurled bombs and escaped with their accomplice.

“The ASI was closed in the police lines in Asansol as we found negligence on his part while dealing with a crime like dacoity. We had initiated a probe against him and found lapses,” said the Asansol-Durgapur police commissioner Ajay Nand.
