Transport official arrested

A former regional transport official of Barasat was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly tampering with documents and issuing registration numbers to vehicles registered outside Bengal. Ranjan Sen, posted at the Barasat public vehicles department, was arrested from his office. An assistant regional transport officer, Samir Ranjan Pramanik, had earlier been arrested in this connection.

Accident: Mohammad Naimuddin, 70, was crushed to death early on Tuesday under the wheels of a private bus at the MG Road-CR Avenue crossing. The driver was arrested and the vehicle seized.

Suicide: Sisir Khan, in his mid-50s, committed suicide at his Vivekananda Sarani home in the Survey Park police station area. His neighbours alerted police on Tuesday morning after they noticed that the door of the house had not been opened since the night before. Police said Khan had been suffering from kidney ailments. ive persons, including a woman, were injured on Monday night when a stationary matador van started rolling on N. S. Road in Burrabazar police station area suddenly after some children managed to get inside the driver's cabin and pulled the gear to neutral position. Sabitri Devi,62, was hit by the vehicle as she was standing in front of the vehicle. Four persons, who tried to save the woman, were also dashed by the vehicle. Sabitri was admitted to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, where she was kept under observation. (pronab)
