A seven-member medical board that examined Pinki Pramanik on Tuesday failed to ascertain the arrested athelete’s gender and referred the case to SSKM Hospital.
The 27-year-old, an Asian Games gold medalist, is behind bars following allegations of rape brought by a woman.
“We do not have proper infrastructure for all the necessary tests. I have asked the authorities to take Pinki to SSKM, which has the facilities for advanced tests, such as hormonal and chromosomal analyses, that can establish gender,” said Sukanta Seal, the chief medical officer of health, North 24-Parganas, and head of the panel that examined Pinki for three hours.
A gynaecologist, two general physicians, a general surgeon, a psychologist and a radiologist were other members of the panel, set up following a high court order. Seal said the panel would submit its report to the court on Wednesday.
The police will move court seeking permission for the gender scan at SSKM.
