A woman in her mid-40s was crushed to death by a private bus that was apparently racing a minibus down Andul Road in Howrah on Sunday afternoon. Two other women were injured.
Police said Jharna Das, 45, was declared dead when she was taken to a nursing home nearby, along with the two injured — Prabha Hazra, 50, and Jyotsna Dalui, 44.
A mob damaged both buses. The situation was controlled after police lathicharged the protesters.
The accident occurred 12.30pm at the Andul Road-Mohiari Road crossing. “A private bus on the Howrah-Alampur route was racing a minibus on the Salt Lake-Alampur route. Both were heading for Howrah,” said an officer of Sankrail police station.
When the minibus stopped to take passengers, the other bus tried to overtake it. “While overtaking, the driver of the private bus lost control and rammed into a stationary Bolero after hitting the three women,” said the officer. Sensing trouble, both drivers fled, leaving behind their vehicles.
