Change of guard at Fort William

Lt-General Dalbir Singh Suhag was appointed the chief of the Fort William-headquarters of the Eastern Army Command on Friday. t-General Suhag is expected to succeed General Bikram Singh in 2014 as army commander. His promotion had been stalled after former army chief General V.K. Singh imposed a discipline and vigilance ban on him in May in connection with a failed intelligence operation in Assam last year. he appointments committee of the Cabinet cleared Lt-General Suhag’s promotion as eastern army commander, army sources told PTI. The officer will take over his new assignment on Saturday.

Bomb scare: Three unclaimed pieces of luggage outside the domestic terminal building of the city airport triggered a bomb scare around 2.30pm on Friday. Officers of the bomb detection and disposal squad found papers and books inside the luggage, said airport sources.

Campus trouble: A group of students and outsiders ransacked the campus of Sushil Kar College at Champahati in the Baruipur area on Friday after they found that admission forms to degree courses, priced at Rs 100 each, were not available in the college but were being sold outside the campus at Rs 700. Police brought the situation under control.

Accident: A 60-year-old man died after a private bus hit him near Shyambazar on Friday afternoon. Narayan Chakraborty succumbed to his injuries at RG Kar hospital.

Theft arrest: Sheikh Mafizul, an employee of a jewellery workshop in Bowbazar, was arrested in Baguiati on Thursday night and stolen gold bangles weighing 800g were seized from him. Mafizul had allegedly stolen the jewellery from the workshop on May 31.
