Trinamul scan on college clerk
- Party leader faces charges of assault and extortion

Raiganj, June 13: Minister Gautam Deb today said Trinamul would hold an inquiry into allegations of assault and extortion against a clerk in Raiganj College who is also a party leader and warned that the government wouldn’t let politics vitiate the peace in educational institutions.

The north Bengal development minister ordered the probe against Tapan Nag after Debasis Biswas, a teacher of the college, took up the matter with Deb.

“Nag is involved in a number of criminal activities. He had raided the chamber of Shatrughan Singh, the teacher-in-charge of the college, along with some other non-teaching staff members and assaulted him on June 7. Three teachers — Babulal Bala, Parimal Banerjee and Surojit Dey — were also thrashed on the campus by Nag and his cohorts who had been brought from outside on February 17,” said Biswas, a former convener of Trinamul’s education cell in North Dinajpur.

Biswas said Nag was also accused of extorting money from the residents of Collegepara in the name of the party. “He had organised an attack on Babulal Bala’s residence when the latter refused to pay the money. As a number of complaints have been lodged against Nag at the local police station and no action has been taken against him, I informed minister Gautam Deb about the charges.”

The minister said the party feels that a permanent solution should be found to the problems plaguing the college. “Trinamul will probe the complaints against party members.”

Nag denied the allegations against him. “A section of teachers has turned against me after I protested some irregularities in the college. I have been serving Trinamul for several years and have not done anything wrong in the name of party. I am ready to face any inquiry,” said Nag, who is also the president of Trinamul’s Raiganj town committee.

Deb said the government wouldn’t tolerate any sort of law and order problems in the name of politics. “I would like to make one thing very clear that the government will not turn a blind eye to any activities that hamper the peaceful environment in educational institutions. Even if Trinamul members are involved in such activities, they won’t be spared.”

The minister’s warning came a day after the chief minister gave her nod to take strong action against Trinamul students who had vandalised the chamber of Rabindra Bharati University’s vice-chancellor in Calcutta. The students were protesting against the introduction of online admission system in the varsity.
