Bhubaneswar, June 13: Maoists have stepped up violence in Odisha, especially in Koraput and Balangir districts.
On Monday, they killed Sukra Huika — an alleged police informer — in Narayanpatna area of Koraput by slitting his throat. Huika’s body was found lying one and a half kilometre away from Narayanpatna police station.
The Srikakulam-Koraput divisional committee of the CPI (Maoist), headed by Daya, has claimed responsibility for the killing. Sources said that posters signed by Daya were recovered from the spot.
Sources said that a group of armed Maoists took away Huika from his house at Odiapenta village on Monday evening. He was killed a few hours later and his body was dumped in the vicinity of Narayanpatna police station.
Ever since the Maoists kidnapped BJD MLA Jhina Hikaka in March, Narayanpatna has turned into a sensitive area as far as rebel activities were concerned.
On the other hand, Maoists operating in Balangir continue to set fire to kendu leaf godowns. The rebels had so far torched more than a dozen kendu leaf godowns in Khaprakhol block of the district to draw the sympathy of local kendu leaf pluckers who are demanding higher wages.
