Hyderabad, June 13: At least eight employees, including two senior managers, were killed in a snag-induced explosion at the Centre-run Visakhapatnam Steel Plant tonight, security sources said.
The toll could rise as around 35 personnel were working in SMS-2, a new steel melting shop where the explosion occurred around 9pm, according to Sri Satyendra, the factory’s corporate communications chief. The plant is run by public sector firm Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL).
The blast occurred in the oxygen control room of the melting shop and the sources suspected that an abnormal build-up of pressure was the cause. The melting shop had been installed only few months ago and was on a trial run.
Vizag police chief Purnachandra Rao said that six bodies had been recovered. Around 15 persons were injured, the sources said.
