Manipuri militant arrested

Siliguri,June 11: The self-styled commander-in-chief of the mobile task force of Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), a banned outfit based in Manipur, was arrested from a hotel on Hill Cart Road this evening.

Police said Rs 1.26 lakh, an ID card and several debit and credit cards were recovered from Norem Priyo Kumar who had checked into the hotel yesterday. The wanted list of the National Investigation Agency features his name. Additional superintendent of police, Syed Waquar Raza, said: “He was arrested during a joint raid by the police and the intelligence agency. We are trying to find out why he was in Siliguri and carrying so much cash.”


6 kids die

Malda: Six children aged between two and eight years died in the Malda Medical college and Hospital in the past three days. The cause of their death is unknown and a team of doctors from Calcutta’s School of Tropical Medicine along with assistant director of health services Asit Biswas has reached the hospital. Blood samples and spinal fluids have been collected from the stricken infants and sent to Calcutta for tests. The results will be available after three days.


Clash at NBU

Siliguri: Three persons were injured in a clash between SFI and TMCP supporters at North Bengal University’s law department over the sale of admission forms on Monday. SFI supporters alleged that the TMCP members attacked them when they had refused to remove their helpdesk from the department. The TMCP said SFI supporters were taking extra money from new students on the pretext of helping them procure forms. Both the parties have filed police complaints.


SSB officer

Siliguri: Avinash Chandra took charge as the inspector general of Sashastra Seema Bal’s Siliguri Frontier on Monday. Chandra is an IPS officer from Uttar Pradesh cadre of 1990 batch.
