BEML chief suspended

New Delhi, June 11: The defence ministry has suspended the chairman-cum-managing director of public sector Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) on a request by the CBI.

V.R.S. Natarajan left his office in Bangalore immediately after receiving the notice this afternoon.

Defence ministry sources said the CBI had asked for his suspension because it was investigating his role in the probe into charges that BEML was supplying sub-standard trucks to the army. The complaints were referred to the CBI by defence minister A.K. Antony after former army chief Gen. (retd) V.K. Singh alleged that he was offered a bribe of Rs 14 crore to renew a contract for the trucks.

Last week, the ministry said Natarajan had sent a legal notice and threatened a defamation case against Gen. Singh without seeking its permission.

In the notice, the defence PSU asked Singh to apologise for alleged defamatory statements. He has refused to do so.
