June 10: The Gauhati University unit of All Assam Students Union today observed Satra Xanhoti Diwas (students unity day) on the university campus.
Dharam Ranjan Roy, general secretary of AASU’s GU unit, said this was the first time that the day was observed on the university campus, the place where the head office of the student union is located.
“On this day two students, Putul Saikia and Gajen Ingti, of Auguri Higher Secondary School in Morigaon were shot dead by security forces in 1974 for protesting against the government,” said Dharam Ranjan Roy, general secretary of AASU’s GU unit.
“Then Assam’s chief minister was Sarat Chandra Sinha and home minister was Hiteswar Saikia. The government tried to divide the students based on caste and community. As a symbolic protest against it and to unite the students, AASU has been observing this day as Satra Xanhoti Diwas,” Roy said.
In 1958, the All Guwahati Students Union was formed, which paved the way to formally form the All Assam Students Association in 1959 and later into AASU.
The organisation played a key role during the food crisis in 1966.
Today’s activity started with hoisting the AASU flag on the university campus.
The members of AASU’s GU unit paid tribute to the martyrs of 1974 by lighting diyas and recalling their sacrifice.
Members of AASU’s University Law College unit also took part in the event.
Inspector of colleges, Jogen Kalita, attended the programme as chief guest.
