Nagaon, June 10: Suspected militants abducted seven employees of a construction company engaged on a mini hydel project in an interior hilly area in Karbi Anglong district this afternoon.
Sources said a group of seven to 10 armed cadres of suspected Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) stormed the construction site of Lunglit mini hydel power project at 1.45pm today and after entering the labourers’ quarters, abducted six men along with a supervisor.
The site on the banks of Lunglit river is 50km from the district headquarters Diphu, under Manja police station. The project is expected to generate 5MW power and the work started a year back.
“Construction was off today as it is a Sunday. There were 12 workers in one labour camp but we found none when we visited the site,” said Karbi Anglong SP B.B. Chetry. Chetry, accompanied by a team of Diphu and Manja police, rushed to the site after the incident was reported.
Civil works of the project was entrusted to one P. Das & Co and supervisor Gopal Das and abducted workers belong to the construction firm. Ransom is suspected to be the reason behind the abduction.
However, Karbi Anglong police said they did not have any information about money demand from the firm by any militant outfit before. “Had we been intimated, we may have provided security to prevent any untoward incident,” a police source said.
This is the third such abduction in the district in the past three months. In March, KPLT militants abducted two groups of workers engaged in hospital construction from two different locations under Bokajan sub-division of the district.
“We are continuing our investigation. But till now we have not made any headway,” Chetry said.
