Unnatural death of children

A team of officials from Swastha Bhavan visited Malda Medical College and Hospital on Sunday after reports of unnatural deaths of children at the hospital. A state health department spokesperson said around 15 children, aged between one and five years, had died at the hospital in the past week. He said the deaths were not because of known causes. The team was led by Krishangshu Roy, director, School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta.

Molest cry

A 52-year-old man was arrested in Patuli for allegedly molesting his 18-year-old domestic help on Sunday. Police said Debasis Banerjee allegedly molested the help on Sunday while his wife and son were away. The help, who had joined work 11 days ago, raised the alarm and alerted neighbours who helped her lodge a complaint against Banerjee.

Accidents

A 65-year-old woman and two youths died in separate accidents since Saturday night. Rikta Sarkar was run over by a government bus at the Maniktala crossing on Sunday morning. Police said Sarkar was going to the local market when the bus mowed her down. She was declared dead on arrival at RG Kar hospital. wo youths died and another was critically injured after the motorcycle they were riding fell into a drain at Tikiapara in Howrah on Saturday night. Police said Mrinmoy Jana, 22, who was driving the vehicle, died on the spot while Bidesh Mullick, 22, who was riding pillion, died after being taken to hospital.
