Besu boys held for cop assault

Four students of Bengal Engineering and Science University, Shibpur, were arrested on Friday for allegedly assaulting cops outside Avani Riverside mall in Howrah following an altercation over parking.

The four students, Ritwik Roy and Soumya Soren of the third year and Rajjyoti Mondal and Prakash Bhawal of the fourth year, were released by Shibpur police station on personal bonds.

The four students had allegedly parked their Hyundai Santro outside the mall on Jagat Banerjee Road and gone inside. The road is a no-parking zone and the mall only allows underground parking.

When the youths came out of the mall, a green police volunteer named Abdul Karim Chaudhari told them that they would be booked for illegal parking. “The youths began pushing Abdul Karim around. A constable of Shibpur police station, Satyajit Roy, tried to assist him and was assaulted by the youths. More cops soon reached the spot and arrested the four,” said a senior officer.

Mall sources said parking slots were free at the time of the incident.

A Besu student was expelled and six were suspended for allegedly beating up a constable in April.
