Karat shies off meeting

Prakash Karat

New Delhi, June 4: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat will skip the June 5-6 Kerala state secretariat meeting amid the intensifying factional feud between state party chief Pinarayi Vijayan and former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan.

Party sources said Karat was scheduled to attend the meeting but had chosen to stay away realising it could be a stormy one. Politburo member S.R. Pillai, known to be close to Karat, has been asked to represent the central leadership at the session.

Pillai confirmed this but denied that Karat was scheduled to be at the meeting.

Sources said Pinarayi loyalists could press for a “chargesheet” against VS at the session and forward it to the politburo and central committee. Apart from the Pinarayi-VS war and the killing of former party rebel T.P. Chandrasekhar, the Kerala unit has been rocked by Pinarayi loyalist M.M. Mani’s boast about CPM-sponsored murders in the past.
