More than 100 children from various sports centres of Tata Steel will take part in a 5km cycle rally to mark World Environment Day.
The Tuesday show is being organised by Tata Steel’s sports department and NGO Debdoot, and is supported by Dhalbhum forest division.
Social activist Surekha Nerurkar will flag off the rally from JRD Tata Sports Complex at 8am in the presence of Dhalbhum divisional forest officer A.T. Mishra, besides functionaries of the sports department.
Saplings will also be planted to mark the green day.
Children from the 14-odd training centres of Tata Steel, including cricket, basketball, handball, table tennis, swimming, archery, chess, athletics, golf and badminton, will pedal past Park Road, Jubilee Park, Bengal Club, Sakchi roundabout, Straight Mile Road, Jusco turnaround, Circuit House roundabout before returning to the sports complex.
Tata Steel sports department events manager Avinash Kumar said that though they had roped in only trainees for the cycle rally, every other green crusader could take part in the event.
“After all, the whole idea is to spread the message of environment conservation among residents,” he said.
The steel major, in collaboration with Jusco and CII, (Jamshedpur chapter) will also observe the day at Jubilee Park Gate at 6.30am.
East Singhbhum SSP Akhilesh Kumar Jha and divisional forest officer Mishra will grace the occassion as chief guest and guest of honour, respectively. Tata Steel vice-president Sanjiv Paul will preside over the function.
