CID steps up investigation

Dhubri/Guwahati, June 2: The CID is likely to make a few arrests to unravel the conspiracy behind the abduction and murder of agriculture department superintending engineer Gadapani Pathak.

The engineer was kidnapped from NH37 near Boitamari in Bongaigaon district on May 2 along with Gauripur agriculture engineering department assistant executive engineer Faizur Islam.

Sources in Gauripur in Dhubri district today said a CID team from Guwahati visited Gauripur, Nalia and Chapaor inspection bungalows and recorded statements of officials and villagers. Pathak and Islam had allegedly visited these places on the day of the abduction.

While Pathak was murdered by the kidnappers, Islam turned up in Bongaigaon, saying he, too, had been abducted.

The CID yesterday arrested Noor Mohammad, driver of the car in which Pathak and Islam were travelling that day.

A CID officer in Guwahati told The Telegraph that they were interrogating both Islam and Mohammad and were hoping for a breakthrough.
