Stipend protest in college

Siliguri, May 31: Junior doctors of North Bengal Dental College and Hospital confined the principal to his office for three hours today demanding immediate payment of their stipends for May.

The dental college has 12 interns and 20 house staff, each of whom get a monthly stipend of Rs 16,225 and Rs 25,775 respectively. Sources said the stipends were usually paid on the 29th or the 30th of every month but there was a delay this time. “We will pay the interns and the house staff tomorrow,” principal Satyabrata Mukherjee said. The protest was withdrawn around 1pm.


Murder arrest

Malda: Shiraj Sheikh alias Hatkata Shiraj, a resident of Ratua, was arrested from Bihar’s Katihar on Wednesday night in connection with the murder of a CPM gram panchayat member in Gajole earlier this month. Khirode Chowdhury was shot dead on May 17 by a group of around 20-25 men who also took away Rs 5.7 lakh and gold from his house. Police said Shiraj had several cases pending against him.


Boy rescued

Balurghat: Residents of Hili rescued an 11-year-old boy from near the India-Bangladesh border on Thursday and handed him over to police. The police said the boy had fled his house at Karandighi in North Dinajpur on Wednesday after his father had scolded him. The boy’s parents have been contacted.


Body found

Jaigaon: Farukh Mohammad, 25, a resident of Chata Colony near Nagrakata, was found hanging from a tree near his house on Thursday. Police said Farukh had left home on Thursday morning after he had an altercation with his wife Kohinoor Bibi.
