Shillong, May 31: Police have initiated an inquiry into the manner in which a constable was killed and three policemen were injured at Gasuapara in South Garo Hills on Tuesday night.
The initial police version said that the incident occurred after a team of policemen, patrolling on foot, was attacked by a group of militants. One of them was killed and three others were injured in infighting between constables based on mistaken identity.
This has prompted the police to start an inquiry.
While the constable, Pearson Sangma died on the spot, Gopal Rai, Jopline Kharkongor and havildar Dilip Marak were injured.
In the past, there were instances of killing of constables through mistaken identity by security agencies engaged in anti-insurgency operations against the GNLA in Garo hills. Meghalaya DGP N. Ramachandran said today a senior police official would conduct the inquiry.
Last year on July 3, two constables, Exmarting Marak and Gopal Prasad Nunia, were killed by another group of policemen in Durama Hills in East Garo Hills in a case of mistaken identity.
