Wife kills self, man held

A young homemaker hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her home in Mango late on Wednesday night, apparently after her husband scolded her for being a careless mother, leading to his arrest on Thursday morning.

Kalpana Mishra (27) was asked to explain by her teacher husband Bharat Bhushan why their five-year-old daughter’s nose was bleeding. Then, Bharat Bhushan went off to attend a housing society meeting of Neelkanth Tower, the apartment where they stayed.

Kalpana hanged herself around 9pm on Wednesday.

However, her mother Kamalini Devi in her FIR alleged that her son-in-law had killed Kalpana for dowry.

According to police, if a woman dies within seven years of her marriage and a complaint against her husband is received, he is arrested. Kalpana and Bharat Bhushan had been married for six years.

Inspector Arun Kumar Mishra of Mango police station said the police could start a probe only after the arrest. A case against Bharat Bhushan under Sections 3 and 4 under Dowry Prohibition Act (1961) has been registered. Police arrested him on Thursday morning. He is now lodged at Ghaghidih Central Jail.

The body has been kept at MGM for autopsy.
