Gold chain snatched
Two youths snatched a gold chain from a 72-year-old woman near her AA block home around 10.40am on Thursday. Police claimed to have nabbed the culprits within four hours. Manjulika Pramanik, the wife of former CPM MP Radhikaranjan Pramanik, had a bagful of groceries in one hand and an umbrella in the other when one of the youths grabbed her chain and fled. According to her, the chain weighs 14g and costs over Rs 35,000. She lodged a complaint with Bidhannagar North police station. Cops picked up Babu Amen, alias Lonka, from a hideout in Labony in the afternoon. The chain was found on one of his aides.
wo persons were arrested for allegedly snatching a pair of earrings and two cellphones from two pedestrians near Avishikta housing complex off the EM Bypass late on Wednesday. Police sources said Pinky Halder, 20, and Bapi Mandal, 26, were approached by three youths who demanded Rs 500 from them. When they refused, the youths snatched the earrings and cellphones.
Emergency landing
A Calcutta-Dimapur-Dibrugarh Air India flight carrying 131 passengers made an emergency landing soon after take-off from the city airport on Thursday. The pilot told the air traffic control that there was a snag and he needed to bring the plane back. Another aircraft took the fliers to their destination. It took off at 12.05pm.
Biker held
A motorcyclist was arrested near the Dhakuria bridge on Thursday afternoon for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Kaushik Mitra, 30, lost his balance after a taxi sped past him, almost hitting him. Mitra reportedly blamed Biswajit Roy, an assistant sub-inspector of the south-east traffic guard, for not taking action.
