Hillary’s thank you to Mamata

A hug from Shah Rukh Khan yesterday and a hello from Hillary Rodham Clinton today.

Mamata Banerjee received a ‘thank-you’ letter from the US secretary of state on Wednesday.

The text of the letter, to “Dear Madam CM”, reads: “Thank you for your kind hospitality during my visit to Kolkata. It was a pleasure meeting you and I enjoyed our conversation about the shared history of Chicago and Kolkata as well as our shared aspirations for the future.

“I look forward to seeing the US partner with the people of West Bengal to help the state in achieving its full potential. Thank you too for your beautiful flower painting, the exquisite textiles and the books which will serve as lovely reminders of our meeting and of Bengal’s rich cultural heritage.”

According to US officials in Calcutta, such a note from the secretary’s office, following the first visit to a leader or head of state, is “procedure”.

Hillary had met Mamata on May 7 at Writers’ Buildings.
