Brahmananda Narayana Hrudayalaya (BNH) has achieved a milestone in cardiac surgery in the state by attaining a success rate that is close to global standards.
Tamolia-based BNH, a unit of Bangalore-based Narayana Hrudayalaya, in association with Brahmananda Sewa Sadan, conducted 500 heart surgeries in only two and half years. The success rate is 98.4 per cent, just a little behind USA’s Klevline Clinic Hospital that boasts 98.6 per cent.
“This is unprecedented. No other hospital in the state has conducted such a high number of operations, that too in such a short span and with a high success rate,” deputy manager (corporate affairs) of BNH Athar Harim said. Till date, the hospital has conducted 246 bypass, 208 open heart, 27 close heart and 19 vascular surgeries.
According to consultant cardiac surgeon Perwaiz Alam, out of 208 open-heart operations, 156 were valve replacement surgeries while 52 children underwent congenital heart surgeries.
“We are particularly happy with our feat of congenital heart surgery performed on children with defects from birth. Corrective surgery is needed on their heart to make them normal like any other child,” said Alam.
Another achievement was conducting a beating heart bypass surgery. “This is a new technology where the operation is carried out without stopping the heart. It is done only here in the state. We also conduct angioplasty to treat closed valves,” he added.
