A councillor of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) allegedly shot at a 25-year-old youth in Hindpiri early on Sunday in what appears to be the fallout of a dispute with another councillor and his aides.
The victim, 25-year-old Mohammed Rafique, is the brother of a friend of councillor of ward No. 25 Mohammed Aslam. Rafique sustained bullet injuries on his left hand after being shot at by ward No. 26 councillor Mohammed Zamil. He is being treated at RIMS.
According to police, who are yet to make any arrest as investigations are on, the root of the dispute lay in an altercation between Zamil and one Javed, another friend of councillor Aslam.
“Last night (Saturday), the cars of Zamil and Javed came face to face at the second street of Hindpiri. When Javed asked Zamil to move back so that he could pass, the latter became angry. An argument followed. Zamil is also said to have flashed a firearm at Javed,” a police officer said.
The news of Zamil’s argument with Javed soon reached Aslam, also a resident of Hindpiri, who rushed to the former’s residence to demand an explanation for his behaviour.
“I reached Zamil’s house around 11.30pm to ask him why did he abuse Javed and we had an argument after which I went home. However, around 3am, he went to another of my friend Sahid’s house in the same locality. On not finding Sahid, he opened fire at his younger brother, Rafique, injuring him,” Aslam claimed.
However, Zamil denied the allegations and instead accused Aslam of opening fire at him and ransacking his home. “Aslam came to my house along with his friends and fired without any provocation. He and his men also damaged my property and threatened me,” he said.
Acting officer in charge of Hindpiri Pramod Kumar Singh said they had registered three FIRs. “While Aslam and his friends lodged two FIRs, Zamil filed one,” he added.
