Probe into cop assault

Police have started investigating the allegation by an Italian consulate official that a cop at Karaya police station assaulted him and his two sons on Friday night.

Senior officers on Sunday asked the accused cop, an officer of sub-inspector rank, to describe what had happened. “We will also ask other cops to describe what had happened and verify whether their statements match that of the accused,” said an officer of city police’s south division.

According to G.P. Paul, an assistant visa officer at the consulate, he had gone to the police station with his two sons to lodge a complaint against a group of youths who had attacked them on Jhowtala Road and snatched valuables.

“One of the two gates of the police station was locked. One of the policemen became furious when my elder son Abhilash asked him to open the gate. On seeing the cop slap my son, I tried to stop him. The man then hit me and also slapped my younger son Ayush,” said Paul.

“The officer-in-charge later called us to his chamber and apologised for the incident. I asked him the name of the policeman who assaulted us but he refused. We were then taken to National Medical College by the cops as my son was bleeding,” Paul added.

The police lodged a case against Paul accusing him of misbehaving with officers.
