Police rescued the 21-year-old student who was allegedly kidnapped from Barrackpore on Friday and arrested one of the “abductors” at Bandel station on Monday afternoon.
Cops in plainclothes spotted Karishma Jaiswal, the third-year student of a Naihati college, on a footbridge, where the abductors had brought her to collect ransom.
“We arrested Md Aftab, who was standing on the footbridge. Two other youths managed to give us the slip,” said an officer of Ghola police station.
According to the police, Karishma went missing on Friday after leaving home for college. The abductors initially demanded Rs 1 crore before settling for Rs 8 lakh.
On Monday morning, Karishma’s relatives went to Khannyan station following the abductors’ instructions. They were then asked to reach Kankinara station.
When they went to Bandel station to take a train to Kankinara, policemen who were accompanying them spotted a woman in a burqa whose footwear matched the description of Karishma’s.
