Girl rescued

Tamluk, May 14: A Class X girl who was lured away from her home in East Midnapore by a youth on the false promise of marriage was rescued by police from a South 24-Parganas village today. The youth had befriended the girl a year ago and had told her that he worked for a multi-national company and had visited several countries.

Track block

Calcutta: Residents of Ghutiary Sharif near Canning blocked railway tracks for nearly three hours from 5pm on Monday after an inspection train ran over a labourer. Several local trains were delayed.

CPM death

Calcutta: The body of a CPM branch committee secretary was found in Sagar island on Monday with his hands and feet tied to a bush. Police said Asit Das, 60, was beaten to death.

Youth drowns

Chinsurah: A 22-year-old youth drowned in the Hooghly while bathing on Monday.
