Plane tyre scare
Male, May 13 (PTI): An Air India plane with 111 people from Thiruvananthapuram narrowly escaped an accident yesterday when one of its tyres burst on landing at Male, the Maldives capital.
Flight AI263 taxied to the apron. The tyre was replaced and it departed safely, an airport official said. There was no damage to the aircraft or the runway.
UK visa rule
New Delhi (PTI): Indians and other non-EU citizens will not be able to appeal in courts against refusal to grant them a family visitor visa from 2014 under new rules announced by the British home office. The move is intended to save money and time for tribunals, sources said. Failed applicants will have to re-apply once the rule is implemented.
Age of consent
New Delhi (PTI): The Centre’s proposal for raising the age of consent for sex from 16 to 18 years would be “regressive and draconian” as it would remain a penal offence, a court has said. Exceptions should be made while deciding the age as in rural parts marriages are solemnised at an early age, the judge said.
Killer brothers
Banda (PTI): Two brothers allegedly murdered their mother and another sibling in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Anis and Nafis, who are absconding, stabbed mother Kadiran, 65, and brother Rashid, 40, and set the house on fire, police said.
Anna invite
Chandrapur/New Delhi (PTI): Anna Hazare has invited army chief Gen. V.K. Singh to join his team after retirement. “We need like minded people and if interested, Gen. V.K. Singh is welcome to join us after his retirement. It would be his choice,” Anna said in Maharashtra’s Chandrapur on Saturday. The activist, an army veteran, is in the state to campaign for a strong Lokayukta.
