Truck rams car, three dead

Jamshedpur, May 12: Three persons, including the director of a premier city-based coaching institute, were killed when the SUV they were travelling in collided head-on with a truck near Chaulibasa village, about 35km from the city, on NH-33 last night.

Sources said the ill-fated car was on its way to the city from Ranchi when a speeding truck hit it between Chandil and Chowka around 11.45pm yesterday.

The driver of the killer truck, however, managed to flee abandoning his vehicle.

All the three occupants of the SUV — Sailesh Verma, director of city-based MIIT JEE coaching institute, advocate Arvind Singh and the driver, who could not be identified — sustained serious injuries and were trapped in the mangled remains of the vehicle. Both Verma and Singh were residents of Sonari.

Local residents soon rushed to the spot and commenced rescue work. Chowka police later joined them, helped extricate the victims and ferry them to MGM Medical College and Hospital. They were, however, declared brought dead on arrival at the hospital.

Police said the impact of the collision was so severe that the front portion of the SUV was completely damaged.

“The impact of the collision was very heavy. In fact, we had to cut through some portions of the vehicle to get to the injured and get them out,” said Chowka officer in charge Ramavadh Singh.

He added that Verma’s car too must have been in good speed to have suffered that kind of damages.

“The driver of the car must have lost control and rammed head-on with the goods carrier. When we reached the spot, the occupants of the car were still alive and grimacing in pain. The trio died on route to the hospital,” the police officer said.
