3 missing in boat capsize

Malda, May 11: Three persons went missing in the Ganga after the boat they were travelling in capsized at Bhutni near Manikchak this evening.

Police said the boat was ferrying five persons from Gadaichar to Heeranandapur when the accident occurred. After the accident, Swapan Mondal, 26, Sangita Mondal, 26, and Chandana Mondal, 17, went missing. The two other persons managed to swim to the banks. A rescue operation has been launched.


Jumbo attack

Siliguri: Chito Oraon, 65, a resident of Fulbari-Patan Tea Estate, was trampled to death by an elephant on Friday. Foresters from Kurseong division said the animal had strayed out of the Bengdubi forest.


Tea ration

Alipurduar: Workers of Bandapani Tea Estate in the Dooars will get the pending ration on May 12 and 22, officials of the garden said on Friday. The decision was taken at a meeting between the deputy labour commissioner of Jalpaiguri and the trade unions. The labourers have not been getting wages and ration for the past six months. A meeting would be held on May 23 to sort out payment of the workers, officials said.


Special trains

Siliguri: Two special weekly trains will run between Kamakhya and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (Mumbai) to clear the rush of passengers, Northeast Frontier Railway said on Friday. The 02520 Mumbai-bound train will leave Kamakhya every Thursday from May 17 to June 7, while the 02519 train will leave Lokmanya Tilak Terminus every Sunday from May 20 to June 10.
