Husband ‘kidnap’ for civic blackmail

May 10: Trinamul activists allegedly forced two Congress candidates for the Haldia municipal polls to withdraw their nominations today by detaining and assaulting the husband of one at their party office and kidnapping the other.

A CPM candidate for the Durgapur Municipal Corporation polls who was ostracised allegedly at the behest of Trinamul leaders went into hiding at a relative’s house today.

Haldia town Congress president Barid Baran Mohanty alleged the Trinamul activists kidnapped 36-year-old Mithu Sen’s husband Pranab from his Kolaghat Thermal Power Plant office. “They beat him up at gunpoint and forced him to call Mithu. She had no option but to withdraw her nomination to save her husband’s life,” Mohanty said.

Pranab said some Trinamul workers accompanied Mithu when she went to the sub-divisional officer’s office to withdraw her nomination.

Another group of Trinamul activists allegedly abducted Congress candidate Tarapada Mondal from his home in the morning and kept him confined till afternoon. Mondal withdrew from the fray immediately after his release.

Lakshmimoni Hansda, who has been ostracised, said Trinamul workers had threatened to “spoil my life”.

Trinamul denied all allegations.
