Cop held with fake notes

Darjeeling, May 9: A constable with the district armed police force was arrested from here today with fake notes with a face value of Rs 48,000.

Police said Mohammad Mustafa, 49, a resident of North Dinajpur, was serving as a security guard at the deputy superintendent of police, headquarters. He had also served as Gorkha Janmukti Morcha president Bimal Gurung’s security guard. The police said Mustafa had recently bought fake notes with a face value of Rs 50,000 for Rs 30,000.


Rape charge

Malda: The husband of a 28-year-old woman has filed a complaint with Old Malda police station alleging that she was gangraped by five men at Naldubi on Tuesday night. According to the complaint, the woman was on her way to a shopping centre along NH34 when five men took her away in a car on Tuesday. Next morning, a police patrol team spotted the woman lying unconscious along the highway. District police chief Jayanta Pal said the woman had been sent to the Malda Medical College and Hospital for an examination.


Lightning

Jalpaiguri: One person died and two were injured when lightning struck them in different incidents here on Tuesday evening. Mustaque Mohammad, 23, a resident of Mantadari in Jalpaiguri district, died when he was struck by lightning while returning home with cattle. Two cattle heads also died. In another incident, Sunita Munda and Sumita Tanti, both residents of Barodighi tea estate in Metelli, were injured when their huts were struck by lightning. They have been admitted to the Mongolbari Health Centre in Chulsa.


Boys rescued

Jaigaon: RPF personnel rescued two 10-year-old boys from Dalgaon station on Tuesday night. Sources said the RPF jawans saw Subham Kami and Janmath Kerketta, both residents of Dalmore tea estate in the Dooars, roaming around the station area. The boys reportedly told the officials that Jiban Oraon, also a resident of Dalmore estate, was going to take them to Siliguri to give them jobs. The boys were later handed over to their parents. Jiban is absconding.
