Sit-in called off

Jorhat, May 9: Altogether 198 casual workers retrenched by Assam Agricultural University on April 1, withdrew their three-day sit-in today, after the authorities conceded to their demand of not recruiting them through contractors.

Surrender

Dibrugarh: Martin Munda, a resident of Sesa division of Russel tea estate at Dikom in the district, surrendered to police, after allegedly killing his wife Lakshmi Munda with a machete on Wednesday.

Snatching

Barpeta: Two unidentified motorcycle-borne armed youths snatched Rs 3 lakh from one Manoranjan Roy at Barpeta Road around 11am on Wednesday.

Woman dies

Dhubri: Baili Begum, 45, died on the spot ,when she was knocked down by Dhubri-Kamakhya fast passenger at Jhagrarpar under Dhubri police station on Wednesday.

Encounter

Imphal: Assam Rifles on Wednesday shot dead three suspected militants in an encounter in Litan of Ukhrul district and recovered three weapons.

Compensation

Dhubri: Ex-gratia payment of Rs 10,000 was paid on Wednesday to each of next of kin of five families, who died in a storm in Bilsaipara sub-division of the district on May 3. Deputy commissioner Kumud Chandra Kalita and SP Pradip Chandra Saloi handed over the amount.
