Shillong, May 9: Fencing work is in progress in several stretches of international border in Meghalaya sector.
Union minister of state for home affairs Mullapally Ramachandran in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha said today 126.07 km of fencing had been carried out along Meghalaya border out of 272.17 km.
Out of 77.72 km (in Assam), and 856 km (in Tripura) sanctioned for fencing under Phase-II of the central project, fencing to the extent of 73.38 km in Assam and 746.70 km in Tripura had been completed, the minister said.
In another phase, work is in progress along 0.84km stretch in Assam and 31.31km in Tripura.
An amount of Rs 2195.67 crore had been spent till March 31 this year for fencing along the India-Bangladesh border, the minister said.
According to Ramachandran whenever damage to the barbed wire fencing along India-Bangladesh border is reported, the central public works department takes up maintenance and repair.
