Food poison: 22 ill

Malda, May 8: At least 22 people fell ill after consuming curd bought from a shop in Mojampur near Kaliachak this afternoon.

Police said 12 people had been admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital, while the rest were undergoing treatment at the Kaliachak rural hospital. Hospital sources confirmed food poisoning was the cause of the sickness and all the affected people were out of danger. The police said no complaint had been lodged yet. Tamajit Chakrabarty, the block development officer of Kaliachak I, said he was leaving for Mojampur to inquire into the incident.


Road blocked

Balurghat: Residents of Tapan and Gangarampur blocked the Tapan-Balurghat state highway at Nayabazar for an hour on Tuesday to protest alleged irregularities in the supply of drinking water in the area. The blockade was withdrawn around 11am after Satyen Roy, the Trinamul Congress MLA of Tapan, assured the protesters that necessary steps would be taken.


Electrocuted

Alipurduar: Md Rafiuddin, a 36-year-old resident of Sisagarh near Falakata, was electrocuted on Monday night. Police said Rafiuddin was trying to fix an electrical fitting at his house when the accident took place.


Three held

Islampur: Three persons were caught in Karandighi on Tuesday while trying to burgle a cellphone store in the area. Police said local people had caught the trio and thrashed them before handing them over to the police. The arrested persons have been admitted to the Karandighi primary health centre.


NBMCH camp

Siliguri: The Thalassaemia Control Unit and the student union of the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital organised a thalassaemia screening camp and seminar on the campus on Tuesday. Sources said around 290 people had been screened at the camp.


Suicide

Malda: Kamala Roy, 55, hanged herself at her house in Bahadipur near Bamangola on Tuesday.
