Students call bandh on May 8

Sivasagar, May 7: The All Tai Ahom Studentsí Union (ATASU) has called a 36-hour general srike on May 8 demanding the arrest of the culprits who were involved in killings of ATASU leader Debojit Lahon and Gobin Mouri, a bystander on Thursday night.

The union had demanded Rs 10 lakh compensation for each of the victims and Rs 5 lakh for those injured. In a press release, the studentsí body has demanded the arrest of Manjir Gogoi, owner of the steel factory at Chunpura in the district and son of Congress MLA Pranab Gogoi.

Employees of the factory allegedly attacked the unionís activists who had gone to seek donation to hold a Bihu sanmilan.

The union also demanded that action be taken against those policemen of Cherekapar police outpost who were allegedly present at the time of the incident and had done nothing to stop the attackers.
