The state government has declared a holiday on Tagore’s birth anniversary on Tuesday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
All banks and central government establishments as well as private schools and colleges in the state will remain shut as the holiday has been announced under the act.
Senior officials at Writers’ said this was perhaps the first time Tagore’s birthday — Ponchishe Baisakh — has been declared a holiday under the act. Till last year, the occasion had been a state holiday.
During a meeting with the Prime Minister last week, chief minister Mamata Banerjee had wanted Ponchishe Baisakh to be declared a national holiday. The plea was turned down.
In yet another break with tradition, the programme at Rabindra Sadan to mark the poet’s birth anniversary would start at 2pm.
Till last year, the programme used to start early in the morning.
