Car window getaway

Raiganj, May 7: A 13-year-old North Dinajpur boy who was allegedly kidnapped on his way to school today escaped by smashing the window of the SUV in which he was being taken away with an iron wheel wrench when the abductors were not around.

Biplab Dutta, a Class VII student of Titpukur High School near Raiganj, said: “I was crossing a field on the way to school when a Mahindra Bolero stopped in front of me. Two well-built men dragged me into the car, beat me up and shoved me under the back seat. I lost consciousness.

“When I came to, I saw the car parked in a secluded place. The abductors were nowhere to be seen. There were no houses or shops nearby. All the doors of the car were locked. I found an iron rod (the wheel wrench) under the seat. I smashed one of the windows with it and jumped off.”

Biplab, who lives with his mother and step-father in Tingidighi near Raiganj, said he realised he was at Siliguri More, on the outskirts of Raiganj, when he saw the Kulik bridge. “My aunt lives in Shaktinagar and I get off the bus at the bridge whenever I visit her. I ran to my aunt’s house and told her that two men had kidnapped me. From the kidnappers’ conversation, I had gathered that they were taking me to Ditol in South Dinajpur,” he said.

Biplab’s mother Beauty Dutta accused her former husband of trying to kidnap their son. “I divorced my first husband, Barun Chakrabarty, because he and his parents used to torture me. Five years ago, I married Chandan Dutta. My first husband had been calling me up recently and threatening me with dire consequences if I did not give him money. I strongly believe that he is behind the abduction attempt,” Beauty said.

Chandan today filed an FIR against Barun at Raiganj police station. Barun lives in Ditol, where Biplab was allegedly being taken.
