Homage to Cong leader

Bhubaneswar, May 5: Political leaders and people from different walks of life today paid tributes to veteran leader and former minister Nalini Kanta Mohanty, who passed away on April 20 at the age of 63.

A souvenir was released at a condolence meeting. The souvenir featured condolence messages from Assam governor J.B. Patnaik, Odisha governor M.C. Bhandare, Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik and other prominent personalities.

Mohanty, a prominent student leader, joined politics in 1969 and starting from 1977 was elected to the Odisha Assembly for a record seven times consecutively from Rajnagar. He was works, housing and urban development minister in the Biju Patnaik government from 1990 to 1995. He was the working president of the Biju Janata Dal and also minister in the Naveen Patnaik government from 2000 to 2001. Mohanty joined the Congress in 2004. In 2009, he lost the elections for the first time.

Former finance minister Panchanan Kanungo moderated the meeting and veteran freedom fighter Bhabani Patnaik released the souvenir brought out by the Nalini Mohanty Memorial Committee. The committee’s chairperson, Pradosh Patnaik, presided over the meeting.

Among others, Pradesh Congress Committee president Niranjan Patnaik, former Speaker Sarat Kar, former ministers Jagannath Patnaik, Narasingha Mishra, Kishore Patel and Ganeswar Behera attended the meeting.
