Hazaribagh, May 5: Police today cracked down on illegal coal miners, raiding four places and recovering around 30 tonne of the mineral that they claimed was illegal.
Four tractors, that the police suspect were used to ferry the coal, were also seized during the raids at Chhatarmandu, Lodhna, Saraiya and Dhawaiya areas of the district.
The raids came after a meeting of a task force comprising district administrative officials, police officers and CCL authorities yesterday after which Ramgarh DC Amitabh Kaushal issued directives for reining in coal smugglers.
A number of police teams fanned out in various areas for the raids. The officers, however, could not make any arrests as most of the coal smugglers managed to flee.
Insiders said that CCL authorities had at the meeting, expressed inability to check illegal mining in their area, from where the mineral was allegedly being ferried to various brick kilns within and outside the state.
DC Kaushal after the meeting had asked SP Anis Gupta to identify various pockets where illegal coal mining was rampant and also asked CCL officials to step up vigil in the areas.
