4 children drown in Jorhat

Jorhat, May 4: Four children drowned in two separate incidents this afternoon at Teok on the eastern fringes of the town.

In the first incident, three girls of the same family from Kawaimari Gohain village drowned in the pond in their backyard when they went for a dip after returning from school, police said.

The girls were identified as twins — Neha Kakati, Class VI and Nikita Kakati, Class VI and their cousin Susmita Kakati, Class VII. They were students of Kawaimari Gohaingaon ME School.

Family members came to know about the incident after they went searching for the girls who had not returned from their dip after nearly an hour. The police said the pond was full to the brim because of heavy rain recently.

In another incident, a three-year-old boy — Rantu Hazarika from Teok Mazgaon — fell into a pond in the compound of the house. Rantu had ventured out to the backyard of the house without being noticed by the family members.
