Railmen emerge champions

Guwahati, May 4: NF Railway lifted the Nuruddin Ahmed Trophy in the senior inter-district elite group cricket tournament, defeating Silchar by virtue of a first-innings lead in the four-day final that concluded at Nehru Stadium here today.

The railmen took a first innings lead of 79 runs bowling out Silchar for 270 in the first innings yesterday and resumed at the overnight 218 for four to pile up 339, losing all the wickets in 96.4 overs in the second innings today. NF Railway were all out for 349 in the first innings.

Set a second innings target of 419, Silchar were restricted to 129 for two in 48 overs at the end of the match.

Raju Das and Kaushik Giri of Silchar remained unbeaten on 50 and 42 respectively. NF Railway spinners Sekharjyoti Barman and Sibsankar Roy picked up a wicket each.

Earlier, overnight NF Railway batsmen Parvez Aziz and Swarupam Purkayastha were out for 22 and 19 respectively.

The seasoned all-rounder Mrigen Talukdar missed a half century by two runs when he mistimed a Raju Das turner to be caught by Harsha Das. He slammed the Silchar bowlers for as many as five towering sixes and a four on his way to 48 facing 53 balls.

Krishanu Mazumdar (26) and Arup Das (19) were the other main scorers for the side. Silchar left arm spinner hauled five wickets for 92 runs and Kaushik Giri chipped in with two for 94.

Assam Cricket Association secretary Bikash Baruah and treasurer Ghanashyam Boruah gave away the trophies and prize money.
