Student suicide

Bangalore, May 4: An engineering student from Manipur allegedly hanged himself here last night as his shocked girlfriend looked on, thinking the young man was merely being theatrical after their tiff.

Jackio Heisnam, 23, grabbed a piece of wire, strung it round his neck and hanged himself from a ceiling fan. Safrina, 19, took some time to realise what was happening and then raised the alarm.

Pak scientist

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear Pakistani scientist Mohammed Khalil Chisti’s plea to visit his country. It posted the hearing for Monday and asked the Centre to respond by then. Chisti, 80, serving a life term in a murder case, had been granted bail on April 9.

Elderly count

New Delhi (PTI): The population of elderly people in the country is expected to reach the 100-million mark by 2013, the government has said.

Fatal lottery

Chennai (PTI): A 24-year-old man who was cheated by an online Nigerian lottery that promised him Rs 7.60 crore has hanged himself at his Tamil Nadu home. The university rank holder had got a text message stating he would have to pay Rs 6 lakh to get the prize money. He raised the money and sent it through an agent, only to find later that the lottery was bogus, police said.

Life for 9

Ahmedabad: Nine persons were awarded life terms and 30 were acquitted on Friday in a 2002 riots case involving the murder of three in Ode village, Anand district. Of the 41 accused, all from the Patil community, one had died during the trial. Another has been awarded a six-month term for voluntarily causing hurt to the victims.

Smut cop

Panaji (PTI): A constable has been booked for allegedly filming an obscene video of his colleague with whom he had an affair and distributing it after the couple broke up. Abdul Kadar Chandsahab, will be arrested soon, police said.
