In-laws held for torture

Police on Thursday arrested the in-laws of the 27-year-old woman who was allegedly assaulted and smothered with a pillow by them on April 23 night. ops arrested the woman’s brother-in-law Meghnath Das, his wife Mithu, daughter Mitali and mother Anubha from Bihar. The woman had run out of the Harish Chatterjee house in blood-soaked clothes after the family members gave her up for dead.

Constable eludes cops

The detective department could not trace constable Tarak Das, accused of a murderous attack, till Thursday night despite raiding Tarak’s Patuli house and interrogating his family members. “We also searched his sister’s house nearby,” said an officer. hief minister Mamata Banerjee last Saturday had ordered action against Das, known to be a Trinamul activist, for the alleged assault on fellow activist Pradip Ghosh in Bagha Jatin on April 26. Tarak had been suspended for allegedly leading an attack on a CPM office and journalists in Patuli during the February 28 general strike. He was reinstated on April 26, hours before Ghosh’s family lodged the assault complaint.

Sleaze racket

A woman who allegedly ran a sleaze racket from a house in Kanungo Park near Patuli, two of her associates and a client were arrested on Thursday. Police sources said Payel Naskar operated the racket with the help of Niloy Mondal and Tapas Das. Six women were rescued from the house, cops said.

Teacher held

Police arrested Debasish Das, 50, an English teacher of Belur High School in Howrah, after guardians of several students of classes V to VIII accused him of showing obscene pictures and video clips on his cellphone to students.

Found dead

A 32-year-old trader was found dead in a taxi near Sonarpur railway station on Wednesday night. A night patrol team found Sambhu Das in the taxi with friend Santosh Baidya by his side around 2am. Das was declared dead at hospital. Baidya and the taxi driver were detained and the taxi seized. During interrogation, Baidya said the duo had consumed liquor at a bar in Patuli and were on their way to Das’s Garfa home. Das collapsed after boarding the taxi.

Kids injured

Two kids were injured when the parapet of a three storey building on MG Road near Jorasanko collapsed on Wednesday. Mohammed Aftar, 6, and Mohammed Osman, 3, were passing by when the parapet collapsed.

Fatal fall

A 65-year-old woman, Lily Ghosh, died on Wednesday night after she fell off the third-floor balcony of her Raja Manindra Road house.
