Maoist arrest

Calcutta, May 3: Calcutta police today said they had arrested a suspected Maoist from a CSTC bus stand on April 21.

The police said Ajoy Chanda alias Jhulan had confessed that he used to buy arms and ammunition from the People’s Liberation Army of Manipur and supply them to Maoists. Sixteen rounds of bullets were seized from him.

Road tragedy

Purulia: A 28-year-old van driver was killed and eight schoolteachers were injured when the vehicle hit a stationary truck in Purulia on Thursday morning. Police said the driver had dozed off, leading to the accident.

Feast illness

Bankura: At least 68 people fell ill after having dinner at a wedding in Bankura on Wednesday night. They were vomiting and also had diarrhoea.

CPM arrest

Bankura: A CPM zonal committee member in Bankura was arrested on Thursday on charges of murder and robbery.
