Order of action against cop

Guwahati, April 29: The Assam Human Rights Commission has ordered the Assam director-general of police, J.N. Choudhury, to take disciplinary action against an additional superintendent of police for resorting to indiscriminate lathicharge inside a LIC office in Jorhat on May 13, 2009.

Several people, mostly LIC employees and policemen, were injured when the police personnel, led by then additional superintendent of police (security) of Jorhat Debendra Deka, stormed into the office and began indiscriminate caning.

The caning was apparently to rein in people who were enraged by the death of an LIC employee a road accident.

The commission asked the state home commissioner to pay compensation for damage of property at the LIC office and also to identify the employees who were involved in setting the truck, which led to the accident, on fire.
