Gold ornaments worth Rs 5 lakh and around Rs 60,000 have been stolen from a businessman’s house in Ballygunge. The finger of suspicion pointed at a help missing since the theft.
Police said Manish Fatehpuria had recruited the suspect, Dhaneswar, on Tuesday. “While hiring the youth, the only information about him the businessman had recorded was that he was from Bihar,” said an officer of Ballygunge police station.
The Fatehpurias discovered the theft of cash and ornaments from a wooden cabinet on Wednesday afternoon, hours after Dhaneswar had sneaked out of the Ballygunge Circular Road house.
When the family failed to trace Dhaneswar, Fatehpuria sent one of his employees to lodge a police complaint against the help.
The police soon found that another youth, who had apparently introduced Dhaneswar to the family was also missing.
The officer said that of the 165-odd highrises under Ballygunge police station, the occupants of only 70 flats have sent details of their domestic helps.
